Hearing scheduled for first medical marijuana dispensary in Anne Arundel

(GABRIEL BOUYS / AFP/Getty Images) The first medical marijuana dispensary in Anne Arundel County could open in Annapolis where a pizza parlor and tattoo studio now sit. Advanced Alternative Therapies LLC has submitted an application to set up shop at 2029 West St., taking the space of Pride & Glory tattoo and body piercing, which is located in the same building as a Papa John’s Pizza carryout. The county’s administrative hearing officer is scheduled to consider the request, which requires special exception approval, on April 6. It will be the first application for a medical cannabis dispensary to go through the county’s approval process, four months after a state commission announced the list of dispensaries with preliminary approval to start setting up operations in Maryland. Of the 102 dispensaries that received preliminary approval statewide, nine are located in Anne Arundel County. Another three are in a district that includes part of Anne Arundel as well as Prince George’s County. Advanced Alternative Therapies is run by David Podrog, who formerly owned Maritime Auto Wash in Annapolis and Severna Park, and Larry Adler, the founder and former CEO of Serenity Acres, an inpatient drug and alcohol rehabilitation center in Crownsville. In a statement, Podrog said the two "plan to design a state of the art dispensary." "We are excited to provide this important medicine to the people of Annapolis who need it most," he said. In Anne Arundel County, dispensaries are subject to additional regulations set by the County Council in late 2015.
