Sunday Spotlight: Candy-maker takes expert skills to medical marijuana industry

Higgins Confections, a gourmet chocolate operation with two stores in Santa Fe, sold his business. Higgins wanted to focus more on his health than his work after suffering a ministroke. But the chocolate artisan didn’t hang up his chef’s hat for good. Higgins sparked up a business relationship with a local medical marijuana dispensary — New MexiCann Natural Medicine — and is now working for the company making marijuana-infused edibles, such as hard candy and fudge. “There are plenty of people I know that will say, ‘Can you bring me some samples?’ ” Higgins said, laughing. “The answer is no. I can’t. I’m sorry.” Higgins, who turns 69 on Wednesday, said he’s happy being an employee instead of the boss. “With a lot of decisions in life, everything comes with tradeoffs. You maybe give up something, but you get something better, and is it worth it? In my case, absolutely yes,” he said after making a huge batch of orange-flavored hard candy in the dispensary’s commercial kitchen in central Santa Fe. “I had to get out from underneath the nonstop stress. That was a driving force to step back and sell the business,” he said. Higgins, who had made marijuana-infused edibles for the dispensary in the past but on a smaller scale, said his new job allows him to do what he loves to do but without the pressures of running a business.
