A growing operation and two dispensaries are to open before Jan. 1 in Franklin County. Another growing operation is to open in Fulton County. Some people will work indoors cultivating marijuana plants or extracting cannabis oils. Others will handle retail sales of cannabis products at a store similar to a pharmacy. Based on operations in other states, the jobs pay well. A technician making extracts in the U.S. cannabis industry can make upwards of $75,000 a year while someone with the entry job of trimming plants earns about $12 an hour, according to industry publications. A dispensary store manager can make $75,000 a year. Each business plan is different. Pennsylvania law allows people with one of 17 serious medical conditions to be prescribed marijuana in pills, oils, tinctures, liquids, gels, ointments and forms appropriate for vaporizers. The Pennsylvania system licenses grower/processors and separate dispensaries. A grower/processor pays a 5 percent excise tax on the gross receipts from the sale of medical marijuana to the dispensary. “They prefer to hire people who have no background in the cannabis industry.
