Mt. Pleasant city commissioners are in favor of limiting the number of medical marijuana businesses that will be allowed in the city. Commissioners spent an hour at a work session Monday discussing what they want in a city ordinance regulating the businesses. The majority favored allowing up to two or three of each type of the businesses: grow operations, processing centers, secure transporters, quality-testing labs and provisioning centers, commonly known as dispensaries. The work-session decisions are not final; they are guidelines for city staff as they prepare to draft an ordinance for the City Commission to vote on. Advertisement An ad hoc committee in July issued its recommendations to the commission, including allowing all five types of businesses, with a limit of up to 10 provisioning centers. The ad hoc committee also recommended that the provisioning centers could be in areas zoned commercial or industrial. All of the other businesses would be in industrial zones. On Monday, commissioners: • Unanimously agreed to allow all five types of medical marijuana businesses. • They did not have a consensus on how big of a buffer zone there should be regarding schools, day cares and playgrounds. Some supported 500 feet, some supported 1,000 feet and some favored the ad hoc committee’s recommendation of “adjacent to.” • They supported several proposed regulations, including saying that provisioning centers could operate only between 9 a.m. and 9 p.m. Other requirements for all of the businesses included odor control, having security cameras and security lighting, panic alarms, restrictions against consuming the medical marijuana in the area outside of the building, and having transport vehicles stored in an enclosed building. • They questioned a proposed requirement that the transfer of medical marijuana would always occur in an enclosed structure, as some wondered how a dispensary in a […]
