Township votes not to restrict medical marijuana business

MARION — Marion Township has chosen not to restrict medical marijuana dispensaries inside the township. Township trustees voted 3-0 in favor of a resolution last week saying the trustees did not find it necessary at this time to limit dispensaries that may locate in the township. "We voted to allow it basically for compassionate reasons," Marion Township Trustee Karen McCleary said. "I’m a nurse by trade, and I’ve talked to many people in the medical field … and everyone I’ve talked to supported it. The medical field of people realize that it is just another form of a plant-based medicine more or less when it’s used correctly." The Ohio Board of Pharmacy began accepting applications for 60 medical marijuana dispensaries on Nov. 3, the next step in a two-year roll-out of the state’s medical marijuana program, which was formed when state legislators passed House Bill 523 last year. The deadline to submit applications is Friday. At least four other townships in Marion County have voted on resolutions having to do with medical marijuana. The trustees of Big Island, Claridon and Richland townships have passed resolutions prohibiting medical marijuana grows, processors and dispensaries from operating in those townships, according to their fiscal officers. The Star reported in May that the Green Camp Township trustees approved by a 2-1 vote a resolution limiting medical marijuana operations in the township to cultivation and extraction, thereby prohibiting dispensing of the drug. Meanwhile, Marion City Council members have been waffling on how to restrict a medical marijuana dispensary in the city limits. Council members voted down a proposed ordinance Monday night that would have placed a temporary ban on dispensaries in the city limits.
