Medical marijuana dispensaries are banned from Greenacres through April 15, 2019, after a unanimous City Council vote. (City of Greenacres /) Greenacres’ city council voted unanimously at its March 5 meeting to temporarily ban medical marijuana dispensaries in the city limits. The vote was of 5-0, with public comments in favor of the ban. Greenacres resident Michael Parnell spoke during public comments at the start of the meeting, saying a one-year ban did not go far enough. "I hope that the city will permanently ban this instead of being a temporary, you know, thing like it sounds like it’s gonna be," Parnell said. "We don’t need that in Greenacres. That’s all I got to say." Medical marijuana dispensaries are currently allowed in a few nearby municipalities. Lake Worth is home to Curaleaf and Knox Cannabis Dispensary, and Wellington and Boynton Beach have voted to allow them. Florida Senate Bill 8A (2017) states that municipalities can either regulate medical marijuana dispensaries like pharmacies or ban them completely. Nearby Royal Palm Beach voted to ban dispensaries in 2017. Regulations require pharmacies and dispensaries to have at least 10,000 square feet of floor area. No more than one may operate in any individual retail development, and they cannot be within 500 feet of a public or private school. Some jurisdictions have increased that requirement to ensure they are not within 1,000 feet of a school. Brian Willever owns Royal Wellington Pharmacy Inc., a pharmacy in neighboring Wellington. "My concern is that when Senate Bill 8A was written by the state, it actually combines a pharmacy as well as a medical marijuana dispensary as the same," Willever said.
