Simsbury Medical Marijuana Producer Looks To Grow In New Location As Business Booms

The recently filed application from Curaleaf LLC, one of just four licensed cannabis growers in Connecticut, will be discussed during a public hearing at 7 p.m. Monday in the Simsbury town offices. “As the demand for medical cannabis in the state has grown, we have identified a larger processing facility in the same town that will allow us to expand our capacity,” Curaleaf Connecticut President Greg Schaan said in a statement. Curaleaf’s current production facility is situated at 100 Grist Mill Rd., the former headquarters of Ensign-Bickford Aerospace & Defense. Company executives chose the 40,000-square-foot building because of its “desirable” features, including “extensive” power systems and an “inherently secure design and location.” But less than five years after the Zoning Commission approved that site plan amendment and special exception, Curaleaf is looking to bloom further. Lora Rae Anderson, the communications director for the state Department of Consumer Protection, said it’s become a familiar trend. “All of the production facilities have either expanded in the past or are currently making plans to expand,” Anderson said, adding Curaleaf hasn’t formally begun the DCP’s application process.
