New York medical-marijuana firm expanding to the West Coast

Hillary Peckham, COO of Etain Etain, a licensed medical-marijuana company with a dispensary in Murray Hill, is expanding to California. It plans to compete in the state’s medical and recreational cannabis markets. The move marks the initial out-of-state enterprise for the Westchester-based company, which was one of the first five businesses to obtain a medical-marijuana license in New York. Etain’s experience participating in the state’s tightly regulated medical-marijuana market will give it an edge in California, which recently introduced more restrictive standards for medical-marijuana quality, said Hillary Peckham, Etain’s chief operations officer. "Our advantage is producing clean material that can pass testing regulations," Peckham said. "The most restrictive standards in California don’t compare to the compliance standard in New York." Etain, which manufactures its products in Warren County, also has dispensaries in Kingston, Syracuse and Yonkers. Licensed since 2015, the company was founded by Amy Peckham and her daughters, Hillary and Keeley. Hillary Peckham said the family was inspired to start the company after her grandmother, who suffered from ALS, was unable to get medical marijuana to ease her pain. Although her physician recommended cannabis as a treatment, it was not yet legal in New York. "Since her passing," Hillary Peckham said, "we have become passionate in the push to expand access to medical marijuana." New York state has done just that and recently approved opioid use as a qualifying condition for medical marijuana. Etain, which has about 60 employees statewide, plans to double its workforce after it ramps up in California. Peckham declined to disclose the company’s revenue. The company plans to sell its Forte and Balance cannabis-oil products for vaporizer cartridges in California by the end of the summer and is working on securing a manufacturing license.
