Medical marijuana ordinance passes, calling for 20 dispensaries in Pontiac

A proposal that would see 20 medical marijuana dispensaries open in Pontiac has passed. Three medical marijuana ordinances were vying against each other on the primary ballot Tuesday, Aug. 7. Two of them allowed medical marijuana facilities to open in Pontiac while the third opted the city out. Proposal 2 would have allowed for up to four dispensaries, Proposal 3 was the opt-out option. Both of those proposals were submitted to the ballot by Pontiac City Council. It was Proposal 1 that ultimately passed with the highest number of votes. Both Proposal 1 and Proposal 2 received more than 50 percent in favor, however according to the city’s charter, it’s the proposal with the most number of votes in this case that’s enacted. The unofficial election results from the county are: Proposal 1: 50,06 percent, 3,900 votes in favor versus 49.94 percent, 3,891 against Proposal 2: 50.33 percent, 3,610 votes in favor versus 49.67 percent, 3,562 against Proposal 3: 49.79 percent, 3,495 in favor versus 50.21 percent, 3,525 against Proposal 1 calls for 20 medical marijuana provisioning centers and an unlimited number of growers, processors, secured transporters and safety compliance facilities. It was submitted to the ballot by East Lansing-based campaign committee Jobs for Pontiac. Just when Pontiac might see its first medical marijuana dispensary is unclear for now, as the city begins to work with its attorney and planning department to figure out how this ordinance fits in with other building and safety codes and ordinances in Pontiac. “This can’t be done overnight,” Deirdre Waterman, mayor of Pontiac said. “This particular proposal was sold to the public that it would bring more jobs to Pontiac … certainly developing jobs and workforce development are key components in this administration and if this proposal lends itself to that we’ll certainly […]
